FRIDAY, JULY 13 | 5pm
SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 | Midnight

CCO music director Eckart Preu had a vision that used and abused violins would be given a new life when paired with Cincinnati artists. They used the instruments as a canvas to represent the orchestra’s Mainstage concerts. Eckart connected with Holly Doan Spraul, the owner and curator at Wash Park Art Gallery, who expertly paired five talented local artists with the concert themes that would most resonate with each artist’s style and passions. And as a bonus, she suggested a Summermusik violin that would represent the festival as a whole.

The result is MusikArt. The violins will be on display both at the gallery through the “Virtuosity” exhibition Jul. 13 – Sep. 15, as well as at each of the Mainstage concerts in August. Bidding will be accepted through the gallery’s website as well as in-person at the concerts and will close after the concert at midnight on Aug. 25. Further details available on the gallery website.

Concert: August 4 | British Invasion

The violin features Cedric’s distinct style and music interests. A musician himself, Cedric analogizes musical elements in his visual art, “A change in rhythm or pitch can be compared to a shift in line, brushstroke, value and pattern.”

Concert: August 11 | The Four Seasons: Reimagined

Nicole’s violin appears to be sculpted out of ice, and is beautifully stark, conjuring images of winter – a perfect fit for our concert featuring Icelandic music and photography. As Nicole said, “I am always working to capture the flux, a rift, the shift between an interior mental space and exterior physicality.”

Concert: August 18 | Voyage of the Red Violin

The violin Tom sculpted features the bright red hue that is a trademark of the inspiration, the Red Violin. Tom uses a whimsical design aesthetic to craft unique works – whether sculpture or canvases – that evoke nature and the outdoors.

Concert: August 25 | The Hero Within

David’s violin honors our nation’s heroes, including stars that represent veterans, as well as bands running around the violin that represent the most recent military conflicts. A Navy veteran, David was the natural choice to design a violin for our concert, The Hero Within. His high energy expressionistic style includes bursts of vivid colors that tell a story.

Inspiration | Summermusik Festival

Sara’s work of art evokes idyllic summers, with nature and music coming together in harmony. A paper collector focused on 19th and 20th centuries, she creates collages, greeting cards and other paper products that incorporate antique and vintage papers.
