Conductor Eckart Preu says it’s okay to have fun with classical music.
And “fun” is what drove him as he planned his first season as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. He was appointed the CCO’s fifth music director in October.
“I don’t think it’s an intellectual exercise. It’s an emotional experience. It’s social,” Preu said about his orchestra’s season, over lunch at Seasons 52 in Norwood last week. “Of course, you could sit at home and do something on your iPod with headphones. But it’s to have fun. You’ll have a good time listening to each piece.”
The Chamber Orchestra’s 2017 Summermusik season in August doesn’t depart from its format of the last two summers – a crowd-pleasing mix of four traditional concerts, “Chamber Crawls” in bars and “A Little Afternoon Musik” in unexpected places.
